I need to rent a car in Los Angeles next month, so I went onto Kayak.com and ran a quick search. The cheapest option at LAX was through a place called Deluxe Rent-a-car, at only about $20 a day including all taxes. It seemed so cheap, I instinctively ran a quick Google search for some reviews of this unknown company.

Wow, I have never seen such bad reviews for a rental car agency before. “Don’t do it!” “Stay far away from this place!” “Worst car rental agency in the galaxy!” “Economic Terrorists!” “They wiped my account clean of over $5,000″ And those were only the first 5 entries. I kid you not.

What did the LA Better Business Bureau have to say? Oh, just their worst grade possible of F:
It’s almost comical, as if there was a competition to run the absolute lowest cost car rental agency possible without being shut down by law enforcement. (They’ve somehow been in business for 9 years.) Check out these user reports, including direct quotes from Yelp, TripAdvisor, and other review sites:

* They don’t seem to actually check that they have the actual car you want before accepting the reservation. They just take all of them to get your business. Then when you arrive, if they have it, great, otherwise, they just give you whatever is available and refund you any difference. “My “standard convertible” became a Toyota Corolla with 65k miles with the check engine low tire pressure lights lit. It also had not been cleaned on the inside.” If they actually have no cars left at all, then oops - too bad!
* They charge everyone a $400 deposit, which is actually charged first onto your credit card, and then they have to reverse it later if they deem everything acceptable. If you get a parking ticket, they’ll charge you $125 + the cost of the ticket.
* The shuttle doesn’t actually arrive in the Rental Car pickup section of LAX. It picks you up in the Courtesy shuttle area, with a “Johnny Park” sign instead of Deluxe Rent-a-Car. Does one area cost more to use or something? Finally, they only promise to run every 15 minutes instead of every 5 minutes like the other major agencies. Users complained of 45-minute actual wait times. I lost count of the reviews from confused customers.
* The cars are dirty. Lots of pictures of stains on Yelp, and also claims of broken glass and bad smells. Don’t expect your “non-smoking” vehicle to actually be that way.
* Multiple instances of the car registration being expired, yet the car was still rented out. Nice.
* Rude employees. Too many stories to generalize any other way.
* Gas policy: You get whatever the last renter left in the car. They apparently don’t have gas pumps at their facility. So you might pick it up empty, 1/4 full, or whatever. If it’s nearly empty, they generously tell you whatever is left is yours. If it happens to be half full, they tell you to bring it back half full.

Let this serve as a warning for potential renters, and entertainment for everyone else. Caveat emptor. As for me, after some more searching I found a coupon for Enterprise that resulted in an even lower rate than “Deluxe” per day. (I also grabbed an additional 2% cash back from Mr. Rebates.) Kayak should really remove this company from their price comparison engine!

Poor Charleston International Airport.

Apparently the air service offered by American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and US Airways isn’t enough. Now it wants Southwest Airlines, too, and it knows just how to get it — with a new 5 percent car rental tax.

Charleston’s County Council earlier this week reportedly pressed ahead with a new a tax on rental cars that’s meant to raise incentive money to lure a low-cost airline to town, presumably Southwest, as supporters wearing “Let’s Fly” stickers looked on approvingly.

Here’s the ordinance (PDF).

The money will be used to, “among other things, promote tourism and economic development through the provision of air service incentives, development, and advertising that facilitate additional flight options and increased competition for air travel,” according to the law.

Can you say “bad idea”?

Forgetting, for the moment, the questionable benefit to car renters of having Southwest Airlines service in Charleston — I mean, they’re renting a car, not flying — there’s the little issue of taxation without representation.

Quite simply, most of the car rental customers didn’t get to vote for the council members who passed this ordinance by an 8-1 vote. Nor will they get anything out of the increased air service, unless they use the airport and fly on Southwest. And those are two very big “ifs.”

This is only the latest bad idea from lawmakers on both the local and state level. Remember Wisconsin’s outragous car rental tax? Or Florida’s silly idea to fund Tri-Rail?

Look, I’m not opposed to taxes. They’re inevitable. But to not have a say-so in the matter, at some level, is wrong. (Even though Charleston’s goal, to bring a low-cost carrier to the airport, is a laudable idea, there has to be a better way.)

There’s also the issue of fairness, as one commenter pointed out on the Post and Courier’s site.

This is taxpayer subsidized competition being put in place that does not create a level playing field for the existing Charleston airlines.

Let the market decide who decides to fly here. If subsidies or money or funding is given to “one” airline, it should be given to them all to be fair.

It’s not over yet. Next up is a public hearing on May 20, which will leading to a final council vote on the tax. If you live in Charleston, you might want to show up. It starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Public Services Building, 4045 Bridge View Drive, North Charleston.

Welcome to my Barbados naked series. Here I will provide you with details of things to see and do on the island and recommend restaurants, bars and excursions that I have either experienced myself or had guests tell me just how good they really are. One very useful fact to know is that there are a number of flights from Barbados to the Grenadines, both as day tours and as transfers, that are known as ‘shared charters’. Practically speaking they run every day, but because they are run by charter airlines, rather than scheduled companies, they are not listed on the international computer systems. St Barth Commuter

A local airline based in St Barths, which offers scheduled flights from there to St Martin/St Maarten and Caribbean private aircraft charters to islands all over the Eastern Caribbean. They have a fleet of five twin-engine planes and five specially trained (STOL) pilots with permission to land in St Barths.

SVG Air

A local Caribbean airline that offers charters to the Grenadines from around the region, often from Barbados, but also from St Lucia and Grenada, even from as far as Puerto Rico. SVG Air has around a dozen 5-19-seater planes and also offers island hopping and air ambulance services.

AIRPORT

Grantley Adams International Airport (airport code BGI, after Bridgetown, the island’s capital) is located approximately 10 miles/16km south east of Bridgetown city centre. VIPvillas.com have luxury portfolio of West Coast Villas in Barbados for you to choose from; they really are sheer luxury!

The airport has recently undergone a multi-million dollar expansion with the major phase completed in 2007. This included the construction of a new, much larger arrivals terminal which now houses 22 immigration work stations, five large luggage carousels and two duty free shops. The old arrivals hall has become part of an extended departure lounge and houses a new airside food court and retail concourse. Other facilities include a bank and postal services. Approximately four air bridges are part of the next set of improvements and there has been talk of enclosing the check-in area and installing air-conditioning.

PASSPORTS & VISAS

As a visitor to Barbados you will require a passport which is valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry, along with a valid return airline ticket. This now applies to all American and Canadian citizens, whilst British citizens are required to hold a full 10-year passport. American, Canadian, British and EU citizens do not require a visa for short stays. Other nationalities please check with the Barbados High Commission or with your travel organiser for entry requirements

LOCAL TRANSPORT

The bus system in Barbados is a good one and the fleet of blue and yellow buses (BM licence plate) reaches every corner throughout the island on a regular basis. You will need exact change for the buses and they stop only at official bus stops, which are marked either ‘To City’ or ‘Out of City’ in a red and white circle. The destination is displayed over the front windscreen.

The Government service is supplemented by privately operated mini-buses (B licence plate) that are painted yellow with a blue stripe down the side, and route taxis (ZR licence) which are white with a burgundy stripe. These buses do give change, and they also play local music (somewhat loud at times) and can be hailed down anywhere on route. Destinations are usually on a sign placed in the bottom left-hand corner of the windscreen, and routes normally painted on the sides of the buses. It should be noted that ZR vans are an adventure as well as a mode of transport. They tend to stop at the drop of a hat and travel at speeds which are not for the faint hearted. But then they’ll go out of their way to drop a granny with her shopping outside her house. Avoid travelling at peak times when buses are packed to the limit. The fare to any destination is Bds$1.50 one-way. Depending on the routes, during the week buses can operate from as early as 5.30am to as late as 12.30pm.

CAR HIRE

Hiring a car is an excellent addition to a visit to the Caribbean, but particularly so in Barbados because there is plenty to do and because the island is surprisingly good to explore. There are some delightful beaches cut into the cliffs of the south east, which make for an excellent day out and picnic, and the Atlantic coast is wonderfully dramatic. Getting lost in the canefields is almost par for the course, so don’t worry when you do. Just stop and ask and someone is bound to help. Finally, there are all the restaurants to visit in the evening. From an island perspective, cars are a vital aspect of local life. The Bajans would prefer to drive a few hundred yards to work than to walk and so there is actually a rush hour each morning and evening. There are a staggering 1719 kms of paved road network on the island.

A local driving permit is required to drive in Barbados. This costs Bds$10 and can be obtained from the car hire company when you hire the car, or at any police station. If you are visiting during the winter season and know that you will want a car then it is advisable to book it well in advance otherwise, due to demand, it will be impossible to get hold of one. VIP villas can secure excellent car hire rates for you; better than the main car hire companies. You must have held a licence for at least two years to hire a car in Barbados, and be at least 21 years of age and under 75 years of age.

Comprehensive insurance is included in the rental rate except for a deductible of US$1,500 in case of loss, accident or damage to the vehicles – regardless of fault.

A collision damage waiver (CDW) is offered to cover this deductible at a cost of US$49/week or US$10/day. Clients are charged for the petrol in the vehicles at the time of hire, and should return the vehicles empty. Child seats and booster seats are available for hire on request. Car hire rates, CDW, petrol, and extras such as child and booster seats are subject to 15% VAT. Payment is made for the hire at the time of delivery.

DRIVING & PARKING

Driving is on the left on Barbados, don’t forget your driving licence!

Generally speaking drivers are fairly courteous and, being quite conservative, they tend to abide by the Highway Code. However do be cautious going around roundabouts, as not all drivers know which lane they ought to be in. You will also need to keep an eye out for Z vans and minibuses which stop in the middle of the road at the drop of a hat. Try to avoid going anywhere during the rush hour, when all of the major roads heading into Bridgetown, Holetown and the South Coast tend to be back-to-back with traffic (the local radio stations have traffic reports during both the morning and evening rush hours). Almost every household on the island seems to own a car, and for those that do not there are plenty of families who have more than one. Some children still walk to school, so as there are very few pavements (sidewalks) you should drive with caution during the start/finish of the school day. Take special care when going around blind corners in rural areas.

Drink driving laws are being introduced so check for new regulations.

Seat belts are compulsory and failure to wear one attracts a fine of Bds$500. The speed limit in Barbados is 37 mph/60 kph except on the highways (55 mph/80 kph) and in Bridgetown (20 mph/32 kph).

PARKING

The parking fee for official car parks in Bridgetown, and at the airport, is currently Bds$1 per hour or part thereof, and $6 for the whole day. Tickets are issued on entering and payment is made on exit.

TAXIS

Taxis are widely available around Barbados (if you can’t find one just walk into the nearest hotel and they’ll find one for you), with taxi stands located at the airport, Bridgetown Harbour, and Bridgetown at Independence Square Lower, Broad Street and Heroes Square, South Coast at Accra Beach – Hastings Rocks, West Coast at Sunset Crest Shopping Centres 1 and 2.

Taxis are not metered. Instead the fares are fixed. However it is always a good idea to confirm the cost of your journey before setting off.

Rates by distance should not exceed Bds$2.50 per mile or Bds$1.50 per kilometre. The flat rate per hour is Bds$32, with waiting time Bds$7 per hour between 6am to 10pm, and Bds$8 per hour between 10pm and 6am.

MEDICAL

Generally the climate in Barbados is pretty benign and there are only a couple of issues that you can encounter here that are not in Europe or the States. Check that your coverage for polio and tetanus is up to date. There is no malaria in Barbados, but there are very occasional outbreaks of dengue fever – another mosquito-borne disease which happens after considerable rain. You should take normal precautions against mosquito bites. If you are susceptible then make sure to use insect repellent during daylight hours and after sunset.

Visitors’ prescriptions can be fulfilled by local pharmacies, following consultation with a local physician.

HOSPITALS

The medical facilities in Barbados are among the best in the Caribbean. There are eight polyclinics throughout the island and two hospitals.

The general hospital is Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in Bridgetown which has 600 beds and operates a 24 hour A&E department.

There is also a modern private facility at the Bay View Hospital in St Michael which does not have an A&E Dept., however there is the FMH Emergency Medical Clinic in St Michael.

VACCINATIONS

Vaccinations are not required for entry into Barbados, though you may with to check with your GP prior to travelling. There is one exception, for travellers who have come from areas infected with of Yellow Fever, where a vaccination certificate is required from travellers over one (1) year of age.

ELECTRICITY

Domestic current will operate appliances designated for 115/230 volts AC, 50 Cycles, with 2-pin US style plugs and sockets.

TELEPHONE

Barbados has a pretty good telecommunications system and it has recently been deregulated so that mobile phones from abroad will work (though calls can still be pretty expensive). The networks are Cable & Wireless, Digicel and AT&T Wireless.

The international dialling code for Barbados is +1 246 followed by seven digits. When on-island simply dial the seven digits. If you are staying in a villa do check to see if the phone allows international calls, as some have debars, which will need to be lifted, and for which there is a deposit.

Internet services are available at most hotels, and some villas, plus a number of internet cafes have now opened. Cellular phones can be rented or a roaming feature can be added to your own mobile

Overseas phone calls can be made from any phone booth around the island, payment for which is by credit card or a local pre-paid calling card.

TIME ZONE

Barbados is 4 hours behind GMT and so during the winter it is four hours behind Britain and five behind the rest of Europe, and an hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time in the States. Barbados has no daylight saving time in the summer so the island is then five hours behind British Summer Time (six behind the rest of Europe) and on the same time as the eastern seaboard of the United States.

DEPARTURE TAX & TAXES

Departure tax is no longer payable at the airline check-in desk as it should be included in the cost of your airline ticket – please check your ticket to confirm this. This tax (passenger service charge) is payable by all passengers leaving the island (exempt for stays under 24 hours) and over the age of 12 years. The amount increased to Bds$55/US$27.50 on 1st February 2007.

Hotel and villa accommodation incurs a 7.5% government room tax and a service charge in Barbados, which is normally added to your bill (unless you are staying in an all-inclusive hotel). It can make quite a difference to the eventual price of your holiday, so if you are booking direct make sure you calculate it in when pricing up your trip.

A 15% VAT applies to most services including car hire, tourist attractions, restaurants, retail (apart from Duty Free items), excursions etc, but this is usually included in the published price, except for car hire rates, which are usually quoted excluding VAT so you’ll need to add it.

WEATHER

Barbados boasts that it has 3000 hours of sunshine each year. Certainly even within the Caribbean it has an excellent climate. Temperatures vary by just a few degrees across the year and because it is surrounded by sea the island rarely gets too hot, except occasionally in summer, particularly if it is still. Generally though, there is a breeze to take the edge off the heat. The best time to visit is in the winter, when the northern hemisphere is at its coldest in February, though this is of course the high season and the most expensive time.

The rainiest time of year is over the late summer months between August and late October. Often the sun comes back out after a shower, but occasionally a blanket of cloud will spin off a weather system in the northern hemisphere and may cover the island with cloud for a few days.

Barbados lies just on the edge of the hurricane belt, but has not been seriously affected in recent years.

WATER

Most of the water in Barbados is artesian water, rainwater that has soaked into the limestone structure of the land. Generally it is drinkable from the tap and tastes good, but in restaurants you will be offered a choice of bottled or local water. However, with so much pressure on existing groundwater supplies in recent years, a desalination (the largest in the Caribbean) facility is now in operation, which provides water for 20% of the island’s population, currently within the Spring Garden Highway area where the plant is located. Sandy Lane Hotel also has a desalination system.

Piped water was introduced to Bridgetown in 1861, and to commemorate the event an ornamental fountain, made in Britain, was erected in 1865 in what is now Heroes Square.

CHILDREN

In general children are well received in Barbados, but some of the smarter hotels have an age restriction policy at certain times of year, especially during February and March. Others offer special children’s programmes. Most villas are well geared up for children too. It is easy to find babysitters and they cost approximately Bds$20 per hour, plus transport home.

There is not an abundance of playgrounds in Barbados at the moment, however six of the Chefette fast food outlets now have Kids Zones (air-conditioned at Rockley) and each playground has slides, cars and rides and other activities and also cater for parties. Pizzaz pizza restaurant in Sunset Crest in Holetown on the West Coast also has its own playground.

Apart from frolicking in the sea and building sand castles, there are a number of child friendly activities available on island: the Barbados Museum has a dedicated children’s gallery with an exhibition called ‘yesterdays children’ in the Kidd Gallery, Folkstone Marine Park near Holetown is a recreational underwater park with a snorkelling trail, an interpretive centre and museum with marine displays and a saltwater aquarium, there is also a picnic area, tennis and basketball courts and a playground. The Barbados Wildlife Reserve is popular with children for the animals on view, as is Atlantis Submarine and Harrison’s Cave. The Barbados Golf Academy has an 18 hole mini course with special rates for 14yrs and under. There is a Drive-in Cinema near the Sheraton Centre, which also has an indoor cinema. Adventure Beach at The Boatyard has kayaks, pedal boats, glass bottom boats, ocean trampolines, a floating rock climbing ice-berg, beach volley ball and snorkelling. Accra Beach in the Rockley area is another popular beach spot and is good for boogie boarding with boards for hire. Batts Rock on the West Coast (close to Calabaza Restaurant) has good swimming and snorkeling, plus a small children’s playground with slides, swings and see-saws. There is a parking area, picnic benches, shower and changing facilities, and drinks machine.

Barbados has excellent facilities for corporate clients in all types of group, incentive and corporate travel and events. The island has good international and regional air links, making it easy to get to. Where accommodation is concerned, some of the VIPvillas larger villas can make ideal settings for smaller groups. WHAT TO PACK

Consider the following items when packing for a trip to Barbados:

Adequate sun protection, high factor sun cream, sunglasses, hat/cap and a lightweight beach-shirt/blouse/t-shirt; suitable beach and walking shoes; mosquito repellent containing DEET suitable for use all day; cream for insect bites. Also consider and adapter plug, film and batteries for camera; toiletries; beach mat/towel; preferred brand of coffee/tea; small torch.

Clothes – lightweight cotton clothing, with elegant/casual attire for evenings. Note that most good restaurants and top hotels require that men wear long trousers and shirts in the evenings, not shorts, flip-flops or t-shirts. During the festive season people tend to dress up and a few of the more exclusive establishments may request jacket and tie. Women may wish to pack a lightweight wrap or jacket during the winter months, as the evenings (Jan/Feb) sometimes feel cool after the heat of the day.

You should be aware that it is an offence for anyone, including children, to dress in camouflage clothing in Barbados. It is also an offence to bring in meat products from the UK.

BANKS

International and local commercial banks operating in Barbados include the Bank of Nova Scotia/Scotia Bank, Barbados National Bank, First Caribbean Bank, Caribbean Commercial Bank, Royal Bank of Canada and The Mutual Bank. The Central Bank of Barbados has been in operation since 1973. The island also offers offshore banking and insurance services.

Bank opening hours are Mon-Thurs 8am to 3pm and Fri 8am to 5pm. Most banks are closed on the weekend, but the Mutual Bank has two branches that open until 7pm on Fridays and until 2pm on Saturdays, and the Caribbean Commercial Bank opens from 9am to 1pm on Saturdays. ATMs are located across the island, including the airport, harbour, some petrol stations and shopping malls. Note that ATMs will only give out Barbados Dollars (not US Dollars) and some charge for overseas cash transactions.

Banks require customers to show their passports when cashing traveller’s cheques. You will need to show a transaction slip as well if you wish to convert Barbadian dollars back to your home currency.

CURRENCY/CREDIT CARDS

The currency of Barbados is the Barbados dollar (Bds), which is fixed to the US dollar at a rate of US$1.00 = Bds$1.98 (some street/beach vendors may do a straight 2 for 1). All prices on island are quoted in Barbados dollars, with the exception of hotel rates which are in US only, and duty free items where the local Bds$ price is shown alongside US dollar price. US dollars (notes only) are accepted throughout the island, however you will often find that the rate of exchange will not be as favourable in hotels, supermarkets and large stores as that in the bank.

CREDIT CARDS

Most of the major credit cards (including debit cards) are accepted anywhere that deals with tourists on a regular basis. Do not expect local bars or small local restaurants to accept them (if in doubt double check in advance), but you will find that the larger supermarkets often do. It is worth noting that certain credit cards may attract an additional charge.

SCA Teams with Enterprise Rent-A-Car to Eradicate Invasives in Parks and Forests Across U.S.

Invasive plant species cost the US economy more than $100 billion annually. SCA interns have been working with national parks and forests for two decades to protect native plant communities.

Charlestown, NH (Vocus/PRWEB ) May 13, 2010 -- The Student Conservation Association (SCA), a national leader in youth service and stewardship, today announced its partnership with the Crawford Taylor Foundation in alliance with Enterprise Rent-A-Car on a nationwide initiative to protect native plant communities threatened by invasive species.

Exotic, non-indigenous species quietly disrupt and often destroy native ecosystems, costing the U.S. economy more than $100 billion annually. About 42% of the species on the federal Threatened or Endangered Species lists are at risk primarily because of invasive species. The SCA-Enterprise effort will focus on national parks and forests where native plant life is most threatened. Starting in May, SCA interns will map, inventory, restore and revegetate at least 75,000 acres of public lands and conduct a broad range of community volunteer and education activities.

"Enterprise is proud to be partnering with SCA as an extension of our company's long-term commitment to conservation," says Chrissy Taylor-Broughton, assistant vice president for Enterprise Rent-A-Car and board member of the Crawford Taylor Foundation. Budget Car Rental Imatra – Rent a Car!

The city and municipality of Imatra was founded on three industrial settlements situated in close proximity with the border between Finland and Russia. Imatra is in the region of South Karelia, and is under the Southern Finland Province. There are many car rentals in Imatra Downtown that visitors can easily arrange for one.

The most popular destination in Imatra is the Imatran Valtionhoteelli which can be easily reached with a budget car rental in Imatra Downtown. The structure is a castle influenced by Art Nouveau and Jugend styles, and was built in 1903 not far from the rapids. it was meant to be a hotel, hence the name, or tourists coming from the imperial capital of Saint Petersburg.

Another marvelous structure in the town is the Dam of Imatra that was built to control the legendary rapid that flow across the country. The dam is a sight to behold, regardless of the season. In summer, the dam is alive with the strong waters and the surrounding greens, while in winter, it looks like a storybook piece covered in snow.

Visitors should also not forget the Imatran Taidenmuseo to the south of the bus and train stations. The museum presents temporary exhibits, but the larger areas are the site of the permanent collections which include a painting of Eero Jarnefelt that shows a lonely violinist, and a watercolor of the rapids by Gallen-Kallela.

A visit to the village is also never really complete without eating at the local restaurants and food stores. They serve delicious meals of fine Finnish flavors, and it is easy to locate one with a cheap car rental in Imatra Downtown.

Thanks for the answers. My own car insurance doesn’t contain collision or comprehensive (state minimum) I paid for the car in advance with a debit MasterCard on priceline.com. This card doesn’t carry any insurance either. So I either pay the offered and expensive CDW from Alamo or find an insurance company, like Travel Guard who offer CDW for much less. But unfortunately, Travel Guard doesn’t cover Alamo.

Riding around London on the new cycle hire bike

Scrambling down the stairs, looking for a clean pair of jeans it dawned on me. I am going to be late to yet another meeting! TfL had contacted me last Friday to see if I wanted to test the new cycle hire scheme bike. I was happy to oblige but with a pending trip to Argentina in three days I was finding myself even less organised than usual. As I powered my way through London to get to Victoria Street and the TfL press offices I pondered how many people had tried out the bike. I must be in the first few. Also, what would the bike be like? Fast, slow, comfortable, cumbersome?

Upon arrival at the TfL offices I have a decision to make. Secure my bike with a cheap lock and keep my expensive one for the cycle hire bike or the other way round? Someone had commented to me that if you do the maths the scheme is costing £18,000 per bike. While I hold strong doubts about this back of an envelope calculation, I was still certain I wouldn’t want to be responsible for the prototype TfL cycle hire bike getting stolen!

Heading up on the high-speed escalator I reached into my bag to grab my notepad where I had jotted down the questions my Twitterers wanted me to ask. I realised I had left it at home. Soon the high-speed escalator was not looking so cool as I struggled to remember what I was meant to be asking.

No time. I’m shacking hands with Nancy from the TfL press office and having a look at the cycle hire bike for the first time. We take the bike down to the lobby and it’s time to test Nancy out with my questions. Luckily, she knows her stuff.

How will the distribution be done and will electric vans be used?

There will be vans managed by Serco redistributing the bikes to ensure even distribution. These are highly likely to be electric.

Considering the thefts in similar schemes, such as the ones in Paris Velib, what security features will there be?

Compared to the Paris scheme the bikes don’t come with an onboard lock. Hence people are encouraged to leave them at the cycle hire docks. Also, the cycle hire dock is easier to use. Unlike the Parisian one, it is a one step process so people won’t forget to do step two, which is securing the bike. The bikes are also much tougher to remove from the cycle hire dock without paying thanks to the design of the dock. If you don’t return the bike then a £300 charge is made on your card.

Once my questions have been answered there is nothing left to do but try out the bike. I adjust the saddle to my height using the useful quick release beneath the seat.

Lifting the bike off the curve and onto the pavement I suddenly notice how heavy it is. You certainly wouldn’t want to carry this beast up more than a couple of steps. I glance behind and set off. I’m instantly feeling more European. I’m on a cycle hire bike that has a chain cage so you don’t need to roll up your jeans, a basket for your bag and a step over frame eliminating the need for that awkward leg over manoeuvre. This is cycling in a way someone from Amsterdam would appreciate.

I head to Westminster bridge. While everyone else is taking pictures of each other next to Big Ben with their hands in the V-shape, I park up the bike, kick the stand down and start to take pictures of it. My doing so attracts a lot of attention and interested glances. This isn’t at all surprising. The bike really stands out. Its big blue frame and silver plastic handlebar covers are very noticeable. I instantly make the decision: I love the bold design!

Racing a cycle hire bikePictures out the way I decide there is only one mature and adult way to put this bike through its paces. A race! So I head over to The Mall next to St James Park and spot a reasonably fast moving bike messenger up ahead. I switch to the third gear and pedal as fast as I can. I overtake. I’m sure the messenger was very bemused to see a big chunky cycle hire bike overtake him. I’m also sure, that if he realised I was racing him, he would of beaten me by a mile!

However, the experiment did prove that you can reach speeds of 20 – 22 mph on a cycle hire bike. Though your feet will be spinning like you are in a rollapaluza race. Overall the 3 gear choices are fairly good and provide a good enough range. However, cycling even slightly uphill is a noticeable challenge due to the weight of the bike. Luckily in Zone 1 your chances of coming up against a major hill are slim.
Heading out into the heavy traffic

bike-vs-hgv With my confidence in the bike at an all time high I head out into the heavy traffic. Here I test out its manoeuvrability by heading between a bus and a HGV. Probably the least safe place in the world to be and an experiment I wouldn’t repeat. However, the bike steers well and the handlebars are not too wide so there is no problem with squeezing past tight gaps.

The bike is generally very comfortable and easy to ride after the first few minutes of getting used to it. You are in the upright position which gives you a clear view of the traffic. The chunky wheels mean it can handle potholes and a tiny bit of off-road action.

As my two hour introduction to the cycle hire bike drew to a close, almost as fast as it started, I travelled back to the TfL office. On the way back a motorbike pulled up next to me and commented on how funky the bike looked. I think it will be really interesting to be cycling around when the bikes first hit the streets in a mass number as they will be very noticeable.

The receptionist back at the TfL office was amazed at how chunky the bike is. Needless to say she was very surprised to hear it can reach speeds higher than 20mph.

Talking to Nancy again we agreed there is a great buzz surrounding the launch of the cycle hire scheme. She told me that having the first 30 minutes free encourages people to use the bike for short hops rather than borrowing it for the whole day. This should mean more bikes are available for everyone to use.

Hoping back on my own bike felt good. I’m not sure if this was because I knew I would no longer be overhearing whispers of “that’s that new cycle hire bike” or because I could zip around at a higher speed again. When the cycle hire scheme launches on the 30th of July I highly recommend you give it a go.

Whipcar is a UK based service which allows a car owner to rent it out to his neighborhood for a few hours to even weeks. BARCELONA TO PARIS FOR STRANDED PASSENGERS

These last weeks there has been a strike in the French railway service. You can check what is going on at www.sncf.com .

Anyway, there are few Spanish trains that cross the border. Some go to Montpellier, to Milano in Italy, to Zürich in Switzerland or to Paris. These trains are very full or completely full for these days. Milano, Zurich or Paris trenhotel more information at www.elipsos.com Besides, sometimes these trains cannot cross the border because of the French strike so the passengers are transfered to buses. BE AWARE, that if finally you can catch an ELIPSO TRENHOTEL (or a TALGO to MONTPELLIER) you must know if the train departs from BARCELONA SANTS or BARCELONA ESTACIÓ DE FRANÇA. As far as I know all depart from ESTACIÓ DE FRANÇA except the TALGO that goes to Montpellier at the afternoon and that comes from the south of Spain. As I have said THE STRIKE IN FRANCE may cause change in this trains!!!!!! I have heard that sometimes some trains have been cancelled and other times the passengers have had to continue with buses, maybe from FIGUERES.

So another option is to take a regional train to the border – it can be full of people but they go without reservation so you always can have a ticket. They leave from Barcelona each hour or two. Some of them go to CERBERE – CERBERE is the first village in the French State, and some go to PORTBOU. PORTBOU is a Catalan town too but on the south part of border, so inside the Spanish state. When there is strike in France the trains just go to PORTBOU.

If this is the unfortunate case then you will have to go from PORTBOU to CERBERE with other means. I imagine that with a TAXI. It is about a 5 km ride through the mountain that separates both coastal villages.

BARCELONA-SANTS or BARCELONA-PASSEIG DE GRÀCIA are good places to take the train. Nevertheless the big big station is BARCELONA SANTS. There you have a place to leave the lugagge, you have offices to rent a car, you have a lot of taxis, you have a bus station next to it. And a McDonalds and other restaurants. The McDonald’s has WIFI. Nearby, at about 5 minutes, in the street you have some small INTERNET CAFÉS. I also have heard that last night the station remained exceptionally open for stranded passengers.

Once you are in CERBERE you are in France. Even if there is a strike I saw that there were some services so you may find some way of going north. PERPIGNAN would be the first big city to reach.

I have heard that some people united themselves and just rent buses to go to their destinations. In my personal opinion then it is best to remain in a big city to do that.

Another option to go to France is taking a bus in Barcelona. EUROLINES has buses, quite full too. In Barcelona there are two bus stations so you must check which one you need. ESTACIÓ SUD is next to RAILWAY ESTACIÓ BARCELONA SANTS, the main railway station in Barcelona. Then you have ESTACIÓ DEL NORD with much more buses in general.

Some people go with train to FIGUERES and in FIGUERES they take a bus or a taxi or somebody comes to pick them. After all FIGUERES is next to the highway that passes through PERPIGNAN too.

PERPIGNAN and FIGUERES is a 60 km drive that should take about 45 minuts just through the toll highways A9 and AP-7.

I am at www.eurolines.es. I have read that the buses are very full or totally full but I also have heard that there are more buses now so who knows maybe one can take one of these buses.
I put BARCELONA SANTS (it refers to the bus station next to the big building of the railway station) or BARCELONA NORTE (it refers to ESTACIÓ DEL NORD) and you can go

APRIL 20TH 2010 good morning! I just have read that now the things are easier. Some flight have left Amsterdam towards New York.

I wanted to comment also about another place in the border with FRANCE. It is called TOUR DE CAROL. The trains from Barcelona, when there is not strike, they also go to this city in France. If there is a strike in FRANCE, the trains only go to PUIGCERDÀ because they do not cross the border. To go to TOUR DE CAROL or PUIFCERDÀ the train leaves from BARCELONA SANT ANDREU ARENAL so this is an inconvenience so I think it is much better to go to PORTBOU. Anyway, I write about TOUR DE CAROL because there may be somebody interested in going there!

I am also visiting the links I put before and I have realised that some information is difficult to get in English so I will try to put here the timetables I find, etc. I may even open a twitter account. For the people wanting to go to the UK I imagine they know about ships from the army going to SANTANDER. I have to know more about this. Maybe I should also put here a list of embassies.

Once you are in that page choose the option TELECHARGER THE OBJECT. THEN CHOOSE SAVE! I choose to save it in my desktop and know I can have the timetable of FRENCH TRAINS!

I just have looked at LATOUR-DE-CAROL. I see that there are some buses going to TOULOUSE-MATABIAU departing at 0955 and at 1320. I have no idea if it is easy to go from Puigcerdà to La Tour de Querol.

Looking at the departures from PERPIGNAN I see two TGV to PARIS – GARE DE LYON. I just wonder if it has seats available these days. The times I see are 1135 and 1535. Some of the stops are NARBONNE, BEZIERS and MONTPELLIER. I also see TER trains going to AVIGNON, TOULOUSE, NARBONNE, …

At 1238 I see at www.aena.es that some flights are going to HAMBURG and FRANKFURT.
